YELLOW PEA PROTEIN

Shake Shifters contains two sources of hypoallergic plant based protein. The first of which being Yellow Pea Protein Isolate, which is a high quality (80%), highly bioavailable (which means easily absorbed) protein source that's high in iron.

Pea Protein Isolate contains all nine essential amino acids (EAA's) (that the body cannot create and must get from food) and is a great source of arginine (which promotes healthy blood flow and heart health).

Pea Protein Isolate is also a great source of branched-chain amino acids (BCAA's), and contains a physiologically meaningful dose of Leucine (which promotes muscle growth and reduces muscle breakdown) when taken in the quantities provided in Shake Shifters.

Recent studies have shown that Pea Protein Isolate helps trainee’s build the same amount of lean muscle as Whey Protein (when combined with resistance exercise). And is more effective at inducing satiety (a sense of fullness) in overweight people, when compared to dairy derived proteins like Casein and Whey.

BROWN RICE PROTEIN

The second hypoallergenic plant based protein source that Shake Shifters contains is Brown Rice Protein, which is easy to digest and high quality (80%).

Even though Brown Rice Protein isn't a complete protein (due to it's low lysine content), it won't be a problem (as long as you're using Shake Shifters!) And that's because Pea Protein Isolate (which is also in Shake Shifters) is very high in lysine. In fact; Yellow Pea Protein and Brown Rice Protein are like a match made in heaven, due to their complimentary amino acid profiles.

That said; recent studies have shown that Rice Protein (alone) can be just as effective as Whey Protein, when it comes to supporting muscle growth as part of a weight training regimen. Furthermore; an eight week study showed that taking Rice or Whey Protein daily, resulted in similar changes in body composition, muscle strength and recovery.

MILLED FLAXSEED

Flaxseed is a great source of alpha-linolenic acid (ALA). Which is an omega-3 'essential' fatty acid (EFA) that we must obtain from the food as our body doesn’t produce it.

Clinical trials have shown that Flaxseed can improve symptoms of:

Flaxseed works at a cellular level to deliver oxygen (and nutrients) in to the cell and has been shown to decrease blood sugar and prevent insulin resistance (a condition that impairs the body’s ability to regulate blood sugar levels effectively).

Which researchers believe is due to its rich fiber content and could be beneficial for those with Type 2 Diabetes. What’s more, flaxseed contains two types of fiber (soluble and insoluble) which get fermented by the bacteria in your intestines to support gut health and improve bowel regularity.

Soluble fiber absorbs water in your intestines and slows down digestion (which may help regulate blood sugar levels and lower cholesterol). While insoluble fiber adds bulk to the stool (which may prevent constipation and promote regular bowel movements).

Furthermore; the 'digestion slowing' effects of the soluble fiber in flaxseed, may be the reason why several studies show that flaxseed can aid weight management by reducing bodyweight and belly fat.

Flaxseed is also rich in lignans, which are plant compounds that have been studied for their potential cancer-fighting properties. With some studies associating flaxseed intake with a lower risk of various types of cancer, including breast cancer in postmenopausal women.

L CARNITINE

L-carnitine is an amino acid that plays a crucial role in energy production, by transporting fatty acids into our cells’ mitochondria (which act like 'engines' within our cells) and burn the fatty acids to create usable energy.

We can obtain small amounts of L-carnitine by eating animal products like meat or fish, which is why Vegans (and/or people with certain genetic issues) may be unable to obtain enough. Which makes L-carnitine a conditionally essential nutrient.

Shake Shifters contains L-carnitine L-tartrate, due to it's rapid absorption and evidence showing it's possible role in aiding:

Muscle oxygen supply
Recovery from exercise
Red blood cell production
Weight loss (in obese people and older adults)

L-carnitine may also reduce symptoms of Type 2 Diabetes (and its associated risk factors). FENUGREEK

Fenugreek is an ancient herb that's been used in alternative (and Chinese) medicine for thousands of years to treat many diseases and skin conditions. Recently, it has become a common household spice/thickening agent and is often used in Indian dishes (Methi) due to it's sweet, nutty taste.

One of the most common reasons men use Fenugreek supplements is to boost Testosterone, with some studies finding that it has beneficial effects. One 8-week study showed that Fenugreek increased Testosterone and libido while reducing bodyfat. While another 6 week study showed increases in strength and sexual function.

Fenugreek may also aid in metabolic conditions, such as (Type 1 and 2 Diabetes). With one study showing that people with type 1 Diabetes who took fenugreek seed powder at lunch and dinner, experienced better blood sugar levels (and reductions in total and LDL 'bad' cholesterol) after only 10 days.

In another study, people without Diabetes took fenugreek and experienced a 13.4% reduction in blood sugar levels 4 hours after intake. Which means that people without Diabetes maybe able to increase their general carbohydrate tolerance as well as those with metabolic conditions.

Preliminary research also suggests that Fenugreek may be able to help with:

Cholesterol
Triglycerides
Inflammation
Appetite control

With one 2 week pilot study in people with frequent heartburn, finding that Fenugreek reduced their symptoms to the same extent as antacid medications.

INULIN

Inulin is a water soluble fiber which dissolves in the stomach to form a gelatinous substance that:

Slows digestion
Increases satiety (fullness)
Reduces cholesterol absorption

Inulin also adds bulk to stools and increases the frequency of bowel movements (which means more bowel movements, but slower digestion) enabling the body absorb more nutrients from the food we eat (especially Calcium which leads to a stronger bones).

The slow digestion of carbohydrates also allows sugar to be released slowly without spiking, which promotes healthy blood sugar levels. A 2015 study showed that Inulin can benefit people with prediabetes when present in a diet over a long period of time, with other research suggesting that these properties make Inulin a good weight management aid.

Inulin is also a prebiotic. Which is a type of dietary fibre that encourages the growth of favourable intestinal flora (friendly bacteria) by acting as food for these organisms (particularly Bifidobacteria and Lactobacilli) which have shown to help:

Prevent infection
Stimulate your immune system
Fat loss (particularly visceral 'belly' fat loss)
Fend off unwanted pathogens (bad bacteria)

Inulin is also being studied for it's possible benefits in preventing colon cancers and other cancers of the digestive system, but more studies are needed before any strong claims can be made. However; studies show that a high intake of dietary fiber (like Inulin) is already associated with a reduced risk of cancer.

VITAMIN E

Vitamin E is an important fat-soluble nutrient, that plays many roles in the body, including proper immune function and cellular signalling. However, Vitamin E is probably best known for its antioxidant effects (protecting your cells from oxidative damage by neutralising harmful molecules called free radicals).

Some studies show that taking Vitamin E with omega-3 supplements (like those in Shake Shifters) may reduce LDL and triglyceride levels in people with metabolic syndrome (a cluster of conditions, including high blood fat levels, that increases the risk of heart disease and other health conditions).

Other studies have shown that taking vitamin E supplements may benefit certain populations, including people with diabetic nephropathy and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). With a review (in 2021) of eight studies finding that supplementing with Vitamin E:

Improved liver health
Decreased cholesterol
Reduced alanine aminotransferase (ALT) (liver enzyme)
Reduced aspartate aminotransferase (AST) (liver enzyme)

In people with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Which is good news! As elevated AST and ALT levels can indicate liver inflammation and damage in people with NAFLD (so lower levels are favourable).

200IU of daily Vitamin E (which can be found in Shake Shifters) may also help manage Dysmenorrhea (a condition characterised by severe and frequent menstrual pain, such as cramps and pelvic pain) due to it's ability to reduce pain in women with this condition. With the effects being even better when combined with an omega-3 supplement, so don't forget to take your OMEGA 3 and/or ESSENTIAL OILS+!

Additionally, a 2021 study showed that supplementing with a combination of Vitamin E and VITAMIN C (daily for 8 weeks) helped reduce the severity of pelvic pain and Dysmenorrhea in women with Endometriosis.

An animal study from 2019 has also shown that a combination of Vitamin E and L-carnitine (like in Shake Shifters) should be recommended for people at risk of heart attack, due to the ameliorating effects of the antioxidants and anti-inflammatories. However, more research is needed.

Vitamin E supplements have also been linked to several other conditions, including:

Cognitive decline
Skin disorders (i.e. Eczema)
Breathing problems (i.e. Asthma)

However; research is still limited at this stage.

Vitamin E status is particularly important for people with medical conditions associated with fat malabsorption, i.e. cystic fibrosis and Crohn’s disease. As well as those with certain rare inherited diseases, such as abetalipoproteinemia.
